Chapter Nineteen

Saturday

The next morning, I woke up quite late, and thoughts of DI Taylor drifted into my mind. I hoped he was okay, poor guy.

But there was nothing I could do for him. I was returning to London soon, so there wasn’t even time to penetrate that steely barrier to befriend him, let alone anything else.

I wandered into the café to find Luke and Leia already hard at work. The place was about half full. It had a lovely mellow vibe. I walked over to the counter, where Leia was preparing some drinks.

“Evelyn!” she said. “I totally forgot – it’s Saturday!”

“So?”

“So, we need to make a cake for the Village Fete this afternoon. Well, two cakes actually. Marilyn always did.”

Panic surfaced. “Leia, I can’t make cakes! I mean, that roast dinner we made last night was mainly Luke’s culinary talents. Not mine.”

“But we have to. It’s to raise money for the cricket pavilion repairs. Also, the BOMs Union will be raising money for the refugees – not that the humans will know about that. But Marilyn always won the bakery contest with her cakes.”

I made a mental note to ask about the refugees. “Did she use magic?”

Leia looked offended. “Oh no, she’d never do that. She was just very good at making cakes. It would be such a shame if the café doesn’t win this year. Marilyn was unbeatable.”

“Well, I can’t promise to win. But I could have a look in the spell book to see if we can cheat.”

Leia chuckled. “Oh all right. Let me know if you need some help.”

“I can tell you this already, Leia – I need some help.”

We went downstairs to the kitchen, leaving Luke to take care of the customers. He was so sweet to spend his Easter holidays doing this with me. But I could tell he was enjoying himself. It was a great chance for him to escape from the London hustle and bustle too. Although we both needed to return soon.

But for now, I stood at the chrome counter, flicking through the spell book, feeling sceptical that magic could even be real, let alone help me cheat at cooking.

I found a spell that was called the Assembler. It promised to take raw ingredients and assemble them into whatever the wand-wielder imagined in their mind. It was basically reiki for cakes, which probably meant it wouldn’t work.

“Right,” I said. “That sounds like complete load of nonsense. But let’s give it a go anyway, just to keep the young lady happy.”

Leia chuckled. “Okay, well, we’ve got enough ingredients for a chocolate cheesecake and a banoffee pie. How does that sound?”

I shrugged. “Both of those cakes sound delicious. But my new-found psychic senses predict we won’t end up with either.”

“Not if you don’t believe...” Leia mumbled.

“Well, let’s find out, shall we?”

I made a note of the spell on a piece of paper, before putting the leather-bound book safely out the way. My adoptive mum owned far too many cookbooks with pages stuck together from over-zealous whisking.
